Right now, so many of us are carrying grief.
Grief can come from the loss of a loved one, the loss of a relationship, the loss of health, the loss of identity, the loss of a chapter of life, or the loss of an animal. Grief takes many forms, and sometimes we carry several losses at once.
After losing my mom, I found myself carrying a deep sense of loss around how our culture handles grief. We are often expected to get over it, move on, and not dwell in our grief. We are given a certain amount of time to mourn, and then there can be an expectation that we should return to “normal.”
But what happens when there is no going back to the person you were before the loss?
After an intense loss, you begin to understand something about grief that is difficult to explain. No one can do your grief for you. No one can enter your mind and heart and fully know what it is like to live with the reality of what has changed. You alone carry the knowledge of how grief lives in you and how deeply your life has been altered.
We often think of grief as primarily emotional, but grief can be a full-body, full-mind, find-spirit experience. You're not just missing the person, relationship, animal, identity or life you have lost. Your entire system responds to that loss. Your body remembers. Your mind processes. Your energy changes. Your relationship with the world around you changes, too.
This is why I have teamed up with Jenn at Finding Your Stride to bring you a very special Sound Bath for Grief with Horses.
We will gather together in circle, creating a shared space for grounding, sound, reflection and connection. We will begin with a grounding practice to help us settle into our bodies, quiet the busyness of the day and arrive in the space together.
I will then open the evening with an Indigenous drumming song, “Remember Me.” The rhythm of the drum will invite us to slow down and connect with the moment, creating a transition into the sound bath.
From there, we will move into a restorative sound experience. I will guide you through the sounds of crystal singing bowls, ocean drum, crystal pyramid, and Koshi chimes, allowing the sounds and vibrations to create space for rest, remembrance and reflection.
The horses will be with us throughout the experience. If you've never experienced a sound bath with horses before, there is something important to know. The horses will be free to move around the circle (under the supervision of Jenn). They may come close to you, or they may not. There is no guarantee that a horse will visit you.
The horses have minds and personalities of their own, and they are known to take an interest in the sound instruments. They may wander through the circle, investigate what we're doing, or get up to some of their own fun. Each experience is unique, and part of being with the horses is allowing them to be exactly who they are.
Please understand that this gathering is not about getting over your grief, healing from your grief, or finding the right way to grieve. People may cry, or they may not. There may be laughter, silence, sadness, relief, anger, tenderness, or many emotions at once. This is a space where you can allow yourself to feel whatever is present for you, without judgment, pressure, or expectation.
At the end of the sound bath, there will be a sharing circle. You are welcome to share something about your experience, but there is absolutely no requirement to speak. You can simply sit and listen to what others have to share, or choose not to participate at all.
I want this to be a space where we can acknowledge the reality of grief. A space where you don't have to clean it up, make it smaller, explain it away or make it go away. Sometimes we simply need permission to acknowledge that this hurts, grief is hard, and how much life has changed. Together, we will make space for rest, remembrance, reflection and connection.
No previous experience with yoga, meditation, drumming or sound baths is required.
What to Bring:
A comfortable chair
A warm blanket
An eye mask
Water
Anything else that helps you feel comfortable and supported
The sound bath will take place inside the barn, and the space may be cool, so please dress in layers and come prepared to stay warm.
Following the event, there will be time to ask questions, spend some time with the horses, pet them if they are receptive, and explore the barn.
