Root Chakra

Located at the base of the spine, the root chakra is considered the first of the seven primary chakras within many energy traditions. Known as Muladhara in Sanskrit, it is associated with grounding, stability, safety, belonging, and our connection to the physical world.

The word Muladhara translates to “root support,” reflecting its role as the foundation of our energetic system. Just as the roots of a tree anchor it into the earth and provide nourishment, the root chakra represents our own foundation — our ability to feel supported, connected, and present within our bodies.

The root chakra is deeply connected to our relationship with the Earth, our physical needs, and our sense of belonging. It reminds us that before we can expand, create, and explore higher levels of consciousness, we must first feel rooted and connected.

The Root Chakra and Our Connection to the Earth

The root chakra invites us to reconnect with the wisdom of the natural world and remember that we are part of the Earth, not separate from it.

Many spiritual traditions view the root chakra as the energetic centre connected to our basic needs: nourishment, shelter, safety, community, and connection. When these foundations are supported, we create space to grow and expand.

In modern life, many people spend less time connected to nature and more time in environments that keep us disconnected from the rhythms of the Earth. Practices that bring us back into relationship with nature — gardening, walking outdoors, grounding practices, and spending time with the land — can help cultivate a deeper sense of connection.

The Root Chakra and the Physical Body

Within chakra traditions, the root chakra is often associated with:

  • The legs and feet

  • The bones and skeletal system

  • The colon and elimination system

  • The adrenal glands

  • The lower spine

Energetically, it is connected with grounding, physical vitality, survival instincts, and our relationship with the physical body.

When this energy centre feels balanced, many people describe experiencing:

  • A sense of stability

  • Feeling grounded and present

  • Connection to nature

  • A sense of belonging

  • Trust in life’s foundation

  • Confidence in meeting everyday needs

Within chakra traditions, an imbalanced root chakra may be associated with:

  • Feeling ungrounded or scattered

  • Difficulty feeling secure

  • Disconnection from the body or nature

  • Fear around stability or change

  • Feeling unsupported or disconnected from community

Practices that may support root chakra awareness include:

  • Spending time outdoors

  • Gardening and connecting with the soil

  • Walking barefoot on the Earth when appropriate

  • Creating routines and rituals that bring stability

  • Practicing mindfulness

  • Movement practices such as yoga, walking, or dance

  • Connecting with community

  • Nourishing the body with grounding foods

  • Creating a peaceful and supportive home environment

The root chakra reminds us that grounding is not about standing still, it is about creating a strong foundation from which we can grow.

Like a tree, we need deep roots to reach toward the sky.

When we take time to reconnect with the Earth, our bodies, and the present moment, we remember that we are supported by something much greater than ourselves.
