Mullein Iced Tea

Mullein Iced Tea Printable Recipe Card

Wildfire season is in full effect here in British Columbia. Where I live in New Westminster, a smoky haze has settled over the city, and today’s air quality is not great.

I’ve previously written about the potential benefits of mullein, and you can check out that post for more information. As someone who is perimenopausal, hot teas aren’t always appealing these days — so I’ve been enjoying this refreshing iced version instead.

This mullein iced tea is a simple, tasty way to stay hydrated during hot weather while incorporating an herb traditionally used to support respiratory wellness during times when wildfire smoke is affecting the air around us.

Mullein Iced Tea Recipe

🌿 1–2 tsp dried mullein leaves or flowers
💧 1 cup freshly boiled water
🍯 1 tbsp honey (I love using local honey)
🍋 Juice from half a lemon

Optional: Add fresh mint or lemon balm for extra flavour and freshness.

Directions:
Steep mullein in freshly boiled water for 10–15 minutes. Strain carefully using a fine mesh strainer, coffee filter, or cheesecloth. This step is important because mullein leaves contain tiny hairs that can irritate your throat if they remain in the tea.

Chill over ice and enjoy!

Safety Notes:
• Do not combine mullein with diuretics, blood thinners, or certain prescription medications, including some muscle relaxants and lithium, without speaking with a healthcare professional.
• Do not ingest mullein seeds, as they contain a natural insecticidal compound.
• Do not use mullein oil in the ear if the eardrum is torn or perforated.

Stay cool, stay hydrated, and take care during wildfire season.
