Layers of the Auric Field

The aura is often described within many spiritual and energy traditions as an energetic field that surrounds and interpenetrates the physical body. It is believed to be connected with life-force energy, consciousness, emotions, thoughts, and our connection to the world around us.

Many energy traditions describe the aura as consisting of seven layers, each associated with different aspects of our human experience. These layers are often described as vibrating at different frequencies, with the layers closest to the physical body being denser and the outer layers representing more subtle aspects of consciousness.

The aura is often viewed as a reflection of our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.

The Seven Layers of the Aura

The First Layer: The Etheric Body

The etheric body is considered the closest layer to the physical body and is often described as the densest layer of the aura.

Within energy traditions, this layer is believed to act as a blueprint or energetic reflection of the physical body. It is connected with our physical sensations, vitality, and awareness of the body.

The etheric body is often associated with:

Physical energy
Sensation and feeling
Connection with the senses
The relationship between our physical body and energetic body

Practices that support connection with the etheric body may include grounding, movement, time in nature, mindful breathing, and body awareness practices.

The Second Layer: The Emotional Body

The emotional body is associated with our feelings, emotions, and the way energy moves through our emotional experiences.

Within energy traditions, emotions are viewed as a natural flow of energy. When we allow ourselves to acknowledge and process emotions, we create space for balance and movement within our energetic field.

When emotions are consistently suppressed, ignored, or held onto, some traditions believe this may affect the flow of energy and contribute to feeling emotionally or mentally disconnected.

The emotional body is associated with:

  • Emotional awareness

  • Expression of feelings

  • Compassion toward ourselves

  • The ability to move through emotional experiences

Supporting the emotional body may include journaling, creative expression, meditation, connection with others, and practices that encourage emotional awareness.

The Third Layer: The Mental Body

The mental body relates to thoughts, beliefs, ideas, and the way we process information.

This layer represents the relationship between the rational mind and intuitive awareness. When balanced, many energy traditions describe a sense of harmony between thoughts, inner knowing, self-acceptance, and personal power.

The mental body is associated with:

  • Thought patterns

  • Beliefs and perspectives

  • Learning and understanding

  • Mental clarity

  • Self-awareness

Practices that support this layer may include meditation, mindfulness, learning, reflection, and becoming aware of limiting beliefs.

The Fourth Layer: The Astral Body

The astral body is often described as the layer connected with relationships, love, and our connection with all living beings.

This layer reflects how we relate to:

  • Other people

  • Animals

  • Plants

  • The Earth

  • The moon, sun, and stars

  • The greater universe

Within energy traditions, this layer is often considered the bridge between the physical and spiritual aspects of ourselves.

It is associated with:

  • Connection

  • Relationships

  • Compassion

  • Love

  • Empathy

When we nurture healthy relationships and maintain a connection with nature, many traditions believe we support balance within the astral body.

The Fifth Layer: The Etheric Template Body

The etheric template body is often described as the energetic blueprint of our deeper identity and life purpose.

Within many spiritual traditions, this layer is associated with divine will, personal truth, and the patterns that shape our unique expression in the world.

This is considered one of the more subtle layers of the aura and can be difficult to describe because it relates to experiences beyond ordinary physical awareness.

The etheric template body is associated with:

  • Personal identity

  • Life purpose

  • Authentic expression

  • Alignment with our deeper values

  • Connection with universal energy

Practices such as meditation, chanting, contemplation, and spiritual reflection are often used to support connection with this layer.

The Sixth Layer: The Celestial Body

The celestial body is often described as the layer of divine love, compassion, and spiritual connection.

Within energy traditions, this layer represents an expanded state of awareness where we experience connection beyond the individual self.

It is associated with:

  • Joy

  • Compassion

  • Peace

  • Bliss

  • Spiritual love

  • Connection with all beings

Many traditions believe this state can be cultivated through meditation, music, prayer, chanting, time in nature, and practices that quiet the mind and open the heart.

The Seventh Layer: The Causal Body

The causal body is considered the highest and most subtle layer of the aura within many energy traditions.

It is often described as a golden energetic field surrounding the body and is associated with higher consciousness, divine wisdom, and our connection to universal awareness.

The causal body is connected with:

  • Spiritual awareness

  • Higher consciousness

  • Deep wisdom

  • Connection with the divine

  • A sense of unity with all things

Within spiritual teachings, this layer represents the connection between individual consciousness and the greater consciousness of the universe.

Supporting Your Aura

Many energy traditions believe that caring for our aura involves caring for all aspects of ourselves — physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.

Practices that may support energetic balance include:

Meditation
Time in nature
Movement practices such as yoga or dance
Breathwork
Energy work such as Reiki
Sound healing
Creative expression
Journaling
Rest and reflection
Connecting with plants and the natural world

The aura reminds us that we are more than our physical bodies. We are complex beings made up of experiences, emotions, thoughts, relationships, and connections.

When we create space to nurture ourselves on all levels, we strengthen our relationship with our own energy and the world around us.
